Memorial to 161 Brigade after First Battle of Gaza in 1917
The 161st Brigade was part of the 54th ( East Anglian) Division during World War One.
The Brigade comprised of the four Essex Territorial Battalions. 4th Essex, 5th Essex, 6th Essex and 7th Essex
In March 1917, 161 Brigade was involved in heavy fighting with the Turks at Gaza.

After the battle the Brigade erected a wooden cross as a memorial to their fallen colleagues.
