3rd Essex Brief History

 

The 3rd Essex was formed at the same time as the 1st and 2nd battalions in 1881 by the renaming of the Essex Militia Rifles under the command of Colonel F G Whithead based at Warley Barracks.

The 3rd Essex were then issued with long rifles instead of the shorter ones in use during the volunteer days.
