Key to Medals awarded to the Army

DCM- Distinguished Conduct Medal was
awarded to other ranks for exceptional Bravery. The award is
second only to the Victoria Cross.
DSO - was awarded to officers of the rank
of Major and above for gallantry in action in the face of the
enemy
MC - Military Cross was awarded to
officers below the rank of Captain for gallantry in action in
the face of the enemy.
MID - Mentioned in despatches for
exceptional conduct not quite meriting a medal
MM - Military Medal was awarded to
warrant officers, non-commisioned officers and other ranks for
gallantry in action in the face of the enemy.
MSM - Meritorious Service Medal awarded
for services or gallantry but not in the face of the enemy.
VC - Victoria Cross was awarded for
outstanding courage in the face of the enemy. It is considered
the highest honour.
