Bernafay Wood War Cemetery

Bernafay Wood Cemetery is a small cemetery that was used from 1916 to 1918.

Due to the nature of warfare nearly half of the burials ion this cemetery are unidentified.

The cemetery was the site of dressing station in 1916 and converted to a cemetery in 1917.

There are seven members of the Essex Regiment  at Bernafay Wood

Lieutenant Alain Percy Mark Chawner, CSM A J Rowland MM , Lance Cpl R J Sheppard and Privates J Downs, F hawes, G E Mundy, and G Sweeney.

CSM Arthur John Rowland MM

Arthur John Rowland from Great Oakley, Essex joined the 1st battalion of the Essex Regiment and served in India before being promoted to Lance Corporal in South Africa and then served in Gallipoli and France as the Company Sgt Major.

He received a MM but  on 20th October 1916 he was with 2nd Lt Chawner outside Brigade HQ when both were struck and he dieds from wounds on the following day, aged 37 years
