Burnham on Crouch VAD Hospital

Burnham VAD hospital was sited in a galvanized iron hut in New Road close to the junction with Alpha Road. at Burnham on Crouch.

It is referred to as the VAD Hospital, Burnham or the Auxiliary Hospital, Burnham.

Burnham VAD was formed in August 1914 and immediately planned opening a VAD hospital.

1919

By the time that the hospital closed to the military 3,450 patients had been treated.

The closure of the hospital  was marked by an auction on 28 May 1919 at the Hospital.

Items offered for auction were 54 Iron Bedsteads, 68 wool mattresses, 180 excellent heavy blankets, 168 sheets, 120 pillows, 108 pillow slips, windsor arm chairs, wicker easy chairs and numerous miscellaneous effects.

The hospital itself carried on providing care for local men who would otherwise have to make the long trip to Chelmsford.

This treatment carried on for a few years before it stopped and the hospital closed but in that time there had been a further 313 inpatients.

1924

In 1924 the hospital itself was sold by auction as follows

Large galvanized hut, lined beaver board 62ft x 22 ft, fitted with bedroom, wc and ante room plus 2 sleeping huts.

Equipment offered included 20 white enameled bed sheets, quilts and a large amount of furniture, pianette and numerous effects.

The hospital was bought am re-sited in the town as a social club and later used as a yacht store.
