Earls Colne VAD Hospital
The Red Cross Hospital at Earls Colne was sited in the Village Hall.
In the records it was referred to as the Red Cross Hospital or the Auxiliary Hospital or sometimes as Colne Priory Hospital.
It was opened at the start of the war and closed in February 1919.
During the war the hospital treated 1,228 patients from Britain, Belgium, Canada and Australia.
There were no patient deaths at the hospital during the war.
The Commandant was Mrs T H Heyworth of Colne Priory, Earls Colne whose only son was killed at the front in 1915.
Support was given by Halstead VAD led by their Vice President Mrs Deacon of Sloe House, Halstead and Mrs Wren from Earls Colne.
